The Library
The Library is open from 8.30am until 3.00pm on Mondays, 8.15am until 3.00pm Tuesdays to Thursdays and 8:15 until 3:30 on Fridays. Student librarians help out at break times and are trained by completing a course booklet after which they receive a certificate.
Break and Lunch Time
Students are welcome to use both the library and E14 (a computer suite attached to the library) at break times with all the PCs available at Break 1 and six PCs available during Break 2 for schoolwork/homework only.
The Library is a peaceful area where students are welcome to come and read, do schoolwork or just sit quietly and we also do Mindfulness colouring at Break 2.
The Library continues to encourage students to tell members of staff what they would like to see or read in the Library by use of a suggestions book on the Library desk. This allows a streamlining of the non-fiction books and offer greater variety in the fiction stock to reflect the changing attitudes of today’s students and what they enjoy reading.
We cater for all reading abilities and recent additions have included: more Manga books, books with LGBT characters and books of the popular Netflix series The Kissing Booth.
We continue to subscribe to the Booktrust charity to receive 40+ free books every year to go on the Library shelves and for the past few years we have given a free book to all the new Year 7s which they choose themselves from a selection of seventeen different titles.
During this pandemic we have provided other services to ensure the smooth running of the Library:
We have an online Library website, which is currently being developed, so that students will be able order books from us themselves:
In the meantime students can browse the books we have and order from us via their tutor or by sending an email to library@kingdown.wilts.sch.uk which we will deliver to them.
We also provide book boxes for Tutor Time silent reading for tutors.
Finally we have a Kingdown Library Instagram account with Library news including new book acquisitions, competitions etc.
Homework Club
'Session 6' is our general Homework club that runs in the Library Annexe after school Mondays to Thursdays 2:55 to 3:55pm where students have access to the PCs or the books in the Library, should they need them, to complete their Homework in a quiet environment.
Extra-curricular:
We have a Carnegie book award ‘shadowing’ club made up of students who read and write reviews of the eight shortlisted Carnegie books before voting for their favourite which runs between March and June each year. We meet during breaktime on a designated day once a fortnight to discuss the books and write reviews/blogs on our website.
We also regularly organise internal/external writing/poetry competitions.
